MV40 Harry Benson Award

East Yorkshire's Most Popular Cross Country Event

Our 1st MV40 Award - The Harry Benson Award is an annual award that was introduced for the 2024/25 season.

Harry Benson was a highly regarded athletics official based in Humberside, known for his extensive contributions as a track judge, cross country referee and road race adjudicator. He frequently acted as clerk of the course, often marking out courses on Beverley Westwood. He was a well known figure with Northern Athletics and local East Yorkshire clubs, frequently supporting disability competitions and mentoring less experienced officials. He was recognised for his supportive nature towards volunteers and new officials.

Latterly his main involvement was with Bridlington Road Runners but he was also a member of Driffield AC, Yorkshire Wolds Veterans Running Club, City of Hull AC, Kingston upon Hull AC and Humberside Schools. Harry was a former City of Hull AC President and had been a superb athlete for Hull Harriers winning the Ferriby 10 over 60 years ago.

Originally from the Sheffield area he worked as a physics teacher at Driffield School before his retirement.

Harry passed away in November 2023.

This award was sponsored by Harry's daughter Wendy Foster. Wendy became one of the EYXC race referees for the 2025/26 season and follows in her fathers footsteps.
